Instead of being disappointed, I held onto the Bible's promises. The Bible offers countless stories of God opening new doors, after allowing his people to experience setbacks. I found a way to earn money working from home as a writer. I plan to be a contributing writer for an online publication. In many ways this is an answered prayer. I've dreamed of being a writer since I was in 2nd grade. I also dreamed of a way to supplement my husband's income working from home. I feel that working PT from home will enable me to someday be a stay-at-home mom. I know it's been awhile, but this time I promise to write more often.

-As of August I'm a college graduate. The official diploma symbolized having a life again. After countless hours of: research, writing papers, and studying for tests, I finally have time to pursue fun hobbies and interests again. What are some things I've enjoyed doing: leisure reading, counted cross stitch, craft projects, and even watching reruns of my favorite TV shows from the 90s. I am most grateful for having a degree that enables me to serve the Lord in the area of ministry work. Although, I think I am the most thankful for my family and friends supporting me through the whole journey, and God for granting me the finances and sanity when needed. I had a graduation party in November at a bowling alley with pizza, although I'd rather consider it my thank you party, for the countless support I received from loved ones.

- My cousin got married this past fall. They had a beautiful country wedding, and she made a stunning bride!

- The holiday season kept me busy. I managed to bake: pumpkin bread, homemade fudge, and chocolate chip cookies for family and friends. Jesse and I enjoyed celebrating this special time of year with my family by partaking in fun outings, such as seeing a Christmas play. I also created Victorian ornaments for my Christmas tree, enjoyed the holiday celebrations with my church family, and took a special trip to Mississippi to see my in-laws. I've come to the conclusion that if I ever leave the NW, it's so I can become a southern girl. I fell in love with the southern culture, and really enjoyed being in the Bible belt. Well.......the beautiful sunny weather also had a strong influence.

- I recently received a rewarding ministry opportunity. My job involves serving those facing emergency situations: domestic violence, poverty, house fires, ect. The mission of the ministry is to: preach the gospel, help others grow in Christ, and provide the assistance to needy families. My boss is an amazing woman and a wonderful role-model. I feel so blessed to be working at such a spirit filled place!

-I'm looking to pursue writing again. Instead of writing articles, I'm looking to write e-books. My first book covers the art of frugal living. I only have a brainstorm, but I plan to begin writing this week.

- What else have I been up to? Quite a bit. I'm currently attending a weekly Bible study at my church, along with Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University. I'm volunteering with the Good News Club, joining a woman's Bible study this week, and once again......enjoying more free time. In other words if I can't be found at the church or volunteering, I'm probably at home watching chick flicks, playing Martha Stewart, or reading a book.

Christmas Survey (just for fun).

About the TREE....

1.When do you put up the Christmas tree? I don't feel old, yet my 13 year old step-sister enjoys reminding me that I am. I was 13 years old in 1994. My sister thinks I am ancient, because it was before Internet and cell phones were the big craze! Most of my favorite rock artists from my teen years are foreign to her. I own pictures of myself in neon colored clothing with big bangs.I enjoy listening to artists such as Richard Marx, because it brings back fond memories of my younger years. Am I old yet? Well I'll let you decide that one.

I experienced a pleasant surprise today. I stop at a local cafe located on my college campus every Friday. The cafe offers students a microwave to heat up lunches from home. I usually heat up some soup and buy a coffee. The cafe owner enjoys having me as a customer because I always clean up my messes. Today after I purchased my coffee the owner told me to have a nice day. I stated that I will because I have fun plans for my birthday. The cafe owner stated that if it was my birthday, then the coffee was on the house. This just goes to show that you reap what you sow. A simple act of kindness will generate receiving unexpected acts of generosity.
I also received an early birthday celebration from my mother and step-father. I enjoyed dining at a trendy restaurant and donut shop in downtown Portland. My mother brought me gifts. The gifts were unexpected, considering she bought me a plane ticket to visit my childhood home and close friends.

My husband took me shopping at Ross and Burlington Coat Factory. I was able to purchase: 2 blouses, a skirt, earrings, and some bake ware. My husband also treated me to a fancy restaurant. The restaurant's atmosphere created a romantic evening. We were seated beside a fire with piano music in the background. I was surrounded by beautiful contemporary art pieces, and enjoyed a delicious meal.

I also received a $50.00 Amazon gift card from a generous relative. I ordered some books I've been wanting to read, along with soap making supplies. Speaking of soap making, anyone who wants handmade soap let me know. I'm offering to make soap for you.

That was my birthday in a nutshell. I am looking forward to seeing what pleasant surprises this new year brings for me!

More of this Year's Favorite Pictures!

Skeeter, my adorable little lap dog! I hope that everyone enjoyed visiting with loved ones, and rejoicing in the one who has overcome the world! This past Friday I dressed up as the Easter Bunny for my job at the community center. I even performed the bunny hop jig. If my boss gives me pictures, I'll post them here for a good laugh! I have recently began my duties as the church's designated crafts lady. I plan craft activities for the children to create during the major holidays. Anyway, the children enjoyed making the cross statues. I have nothing against the Easter bunny, but felt an activity serving as a reminder for Christ's love was more appropriate. Jesse and I enjoyed going to Shari's for dinner. I truly saw no point in preparing a big holiday feast for only two people. Next year I am hoping to make Easter candies with my candy molds. If anyone is interested in learning how to do this, please let me know. I'll send you the instructions. If you live closeby or plan to visit the northwest next Easter, we'll make plans for a candy making marathon.

The senior pastor at my church offered some valuable wisdom. We all encounter trials. At times we may wonder why our burdens are so heavy to carry. We may ask why those we loved and trusted have abandoned us. As humans we may wonder how Christ could possibly understand what we are faced with. Christ took on the sins of the whole world, and has felt the pain of every sin. Any painful experience or injustice you or I have ever encountered Christ felt on the cross. Christ felt rejection, before we encountered our relationship losses. We may think our burdens are too large to bear, but Jesus took on the weight of the world's sins. If you ever find yourself wondering if you have a friend who understands your pain, you can always turn to Jesus.

May your soul be filled with hope, despite the trials you are encountering. You have a caring friend who will never betray you, even if you haven't met him yet. If you don't already have a relationship with Jesus, I'll be happy to introduce you to my best friend!

Rebelling Against Cultural Trends

I sometimes wish that I had been born into an earlier time era. I realize that perfection in society has never existed. Perhaps we have made progress over the decades. The Civil Rights movement has caused us to question racism. Women's shelters have been created to serve as places of refuge and hope. Amazing medical advances have increased our overall quality of life. Unfortunatley, I do not think there has been much progress in some of our values. It saddens me to think of how countless Americans have traded home and family life for materialism!

I do not find myself longing for the 2 story home with an island kitchen and granite counter tops in suburbia. My Granny was a housewife of the 1950s. My Granny stated that in the 1950s, people did not wait to purchase a home before having children. I can also recall ladies from my Granny's time era stating how people lived in smaller homes. I realize that a brand new home comes with a high price tag, and I don't just mean a monthly mortgage payment. Often times owning a model home requires a dual-income household,(sometimes with both people working 60 + hours a week). I do not see the logic in owning a home, if I won't be spending much time creating memories there! When I see footage of poverty stricken villages in Africa, I see no need to covet those dwelling in new housing developments. I am currently content dwelling within my 2 bedroom apartment. I eagerly anticipate the day my husband and I will own a raised ranch or cape cod home, (and I do not mean as a starter home).

Houses that were constructed in earlier time eras may have less square footage, but they have bigger backyards. Women from earlier generations claim that children spent more time playing outside. Families would watch a couple family oriented programs a week, but excessive television watching was not the cultural norm. If people are allowing their children to watch excessive hours worth of television, is it a wonder why obesity has become more common in children? I may be a product of the 80's, but I did not spend excessive periods of time watching television. My bicycle represented my freedom. I can recall many neighborhood explorations in the rural suburb I lived in. I can also recall many afternoon adventures in my tree fort. I think frequent exercise played a strong role in me not developing obesity as a child.

Millions of families are either glued to the television or constantly on the go. I can not stand being hurried and rushed out the door for excessive amounts of time! The Bible states how times of rest serve as nourishment to the soul. I find comfort in homecooked meals spent together with my husband. I have found comfort in gazing at the clouds form shapes while placing my clothes on the clothes line. Not being in a constant state of busyness has allowed me to form a close friendship with a lonely elderly neighbor. I am so thankful that I have opted to boycott the rat race! Think of the experiences I would have missed out on!

Time has also been created into a luxury for children. I often wonder why so many people claim that outside activities are crucial to a child's development. Many important historical figures did not leave legacies from countless hours of soccer and gymnastics. I am not implying that parents should not enroll their children in activities that are of interest, but rather that they should consider practicing moderation with outside activities. I have fond memories of Girl Scout meetings and dance classes. People have offered their sympathy to me because I did not participate in sports growing up. I did not feel the need to join the perpetual- state- of -busyness bandwagon, not even as a child. I had two nights a week of outside activities, as opposed to endless hours away from the home.

I had the luxury of healthy meals at home, where I enjoyed the nightly ritual of family dinners. I spent many Saturdays on fun outings with my family. A demanding schedule would have prevented me from enjoying the precious memories of my childhood.I did not have a closet filled with sports equipment. My closet was filled with arts and crafts supplies. My book shelf was overflowing with classical literature. My desk was cluttered with receipts for library fines. At least these items helped to create cherished memories with my mother, or otherwise serve as means of mind stimulation. I feel deep sympathy for those who did not share my childhood joys due to being overscheduled! I hope that more coaches and fine arts instructors will consider family friendly scheduling!

I sincerely hope that our nation will start honoring timeless values of earlier decades. The US recession has encouraged more Americans to be conservative with their money. I question what will prompt Americans to start valuing the gift of time. Perhaps we have built larger homes, enrolled children in countless activities, and treated our families to luxury vacations, all while working 60 hours a week. Unfortunately, few authors have courageously described the war on materialism. I recently stumbled across a copy of David Goetz's book, “Death by Suburb”. I spent many years residing in suburbia. Amidst the Applebees and soccer games, I could sense shallowness suffocating it's residents. I decided to read Goetz's masterpiece to see if Goetz discovered the same realities.

Goetz revealed the underlying shallowness and materialism, dwelling within suburbia. A native suburbanite, Goetz listed spiritual practices to keep fellow suburbanites from starving spiritually.Goetz revealed people's false assumptions regarding immortality. Goetez challenged many to redefine what remains eternal. Goetz busted the myths regarding; expensive houses, SUVs, and pilgrimages to Disney world creating immortality. Worldly status will not lead to eternal life. Company layoffs are a fine example of one's immorality coming to a halt! True immorality can only be found in the kingdom of Heaven, (John 3:16 NIV).

Goetz also revealed the truth behind modern day parenting. Thousands of parents view their children as trophies. Honor roll status and athletic accomplishments have become status symbols to the modern day parent. In, “Death By Suburb,” Goetz addresses the dangers associated with children placing their self-worth upon accomplishments. Goetz encourages parents to instill the values of Godly character instead. One trait that Goetz finds appalling is a parent's lack to instill the trait of humbleness with their children. Goetz stated how parents should feel a sense of sorrow when their children open several expensive gifts to claim,"Is that it"? Goetz's solution: serving meals at a homeless shelter, (with the true intentions not being to build an impressive college application).

Several members of suburbia have broken one of the ten commandments by coveting their neighbors. Some suburbanites have found themselves discontent to live in their raised ranch homes. Instead, they find themselves envying those who live in the Parade of Homes housing division. Others envy their co-worker that owns a sports car, or the neighbor whose son is in the gifted program. Goetz challenges people to rethink working overtime for the simple sake of, "making it to the top." A brand new Mercedes might not be worth the high-cost of lost quality time with children! Coveting neighbors might also create superficial relationships. Goetz boldly claims how a person might perform acts of kindness toward a co-worker, only so the co-worker will recommend him/her for that big promotion.Goetz challenges the readers to constantly examine their motives.

Goetz also challenges readers to devote quality time with Christ on a frequent basis. Goetz also explained that genuine acts of kindness, will serve as safety measures to prevent spiritual death. Goetz argues that performing such rituals will enable one to lead a spiritually rich life while residing in a money driven culture.

Mainstream materialism has created a new form of deep poverty. Goetz shows the steps to prevent spiritual death from occurring. “Death by Suburb” offers practical guidelines to ensure that you won't be robbed of your spiritual health. We are all called to live for Christ. If you are interested in becoming a suburban missionary, this book is a must read!

Giveaway

You are going to want to visit this website for the giveaway. My family members were shocked to learn my plans of tithing my inheritance funds. I am still considered a newlywed, and my husband and I have recently acquired additional expenses. I may be far from rich, but I am wealthy compared to the lives of others! Summit View Church was having a special donation for needy families. The senior pastor explained how the recession has effected several local families. I can't claim any luxuries, but my ability to pay bills has not become extinct.

Many people may think that tithing is an unnecessary practice, but tithing is a command for all believers! "Honor the Lord with your possessions, And with the firstfruits of all your increase; So your barns will be filled with plenty, And your vats will overflow with new wine" (Proverbs 3:9-10 NKJV). Tithing demonstrates strong faith by putting God first in your finances. Many are skeptical of this practice. Many believe it will effect their ability to pay for bills. I also used to believe I was exempt from this practice. In reality, nothing could be farther from the truth. If God created the universe, he can see the details of our financial needs!"

God has blessed me beyond measure since I tithed 10% of my income. I have listed the ways God has blessed my finances.

1) I was going for a walk and saw a big sign that said "Free Stuff". I was surprised to find gently used kitchen towels and brand new casserole pans. I was in need of these items.

2) My husband and I went to Fred Myers to buy dog food and other needed items. My husband needed new dress shirts. We were able to purchase 2 dress shirts for 70% off. We had no clue that Fred Myers was having a clearance sale on mens apparel. We saved over $60.00.

3) I was hired for a position I applied for months ago. The pay is higher then what I anticipated.

4) I found brand new craft supplies for rock bottom prices at a local thrift shop. God knows me intimatley, and even supplies my wants!

If you seek the Lord's provision, you will reap blessings!

The First Five Years of Marriage

The American culture places a greater emphasis on weddings, as opposed to establishing strong marriages! Thousands of dollars are spent on expensive gowns and luxury destination spots for honeymoons. Our culture has even created bridal registries so new brides can have designer dishes. What happens after the honeymoon? The statistics indicate that divorce is a strong possibility for newly weds. The divorce rate may have escalated to high numbers, but it is still possible to build a strong marriage. The Bible offers valuable guidelines on preserving your marriage.

I am currently enrolled in an English class which requires writing a research paper. I feel very passionate about preserving the institution of family. Therefore I chose to write about marriage. I would highly recommend reading the book, Focus on the Family, The Complete Guide to the First Five Years of Marriage. Accredited Psychologists and medical professionals covered an array of crucial topics effecting married couples. The topics are discussed from a Christian perspective with reference to scriptures. While the book is geared toward newlyweds, I feel that the topics convey valuable information to all who are married.

Boundaries are addressed, especially concerning parents and in-laws. The Family Counseling Staff emphasized how important it is for married couples to resolve conflict with their spouse. If you find yourself angry at your spouse, do not immediately discuss the issue with your parents, friends, or in-laws. The same principle applies toward seeking advice. It is wise to value advice from your parents, but as a married couple it is crucial to resolve conflicts together.

The Family Counseling Staff also addressed how we are all supposed to deal with irritating habits. The counseling staff claims that it is normal to be annoyed by your spouse's habits. The editors have offered valuable tools for change. The first step involves addressing the problem in a tactful and honest manner. Verbal attacks on your spouse will create tension instead of solutions. Remember that as a married couple you are a team. Habits are difficult to break. DeWitt claims, "If the problem is overeating, for instance, go with your spouse to the gym, cook healthy meals, and go out to eat less often" ( Swihart &Wooten, 2006, p. 35). Patience and encouragement are great motivators for promoting change. The experts also claim that we should all focus on our spouse's positive habits, and not merely the negative aspects of our husbands. We must accept that there will be some annoying habits about our spouse that we will never be able to change.

Constructive tips for resolving conflict were included in the book. It is advised that conflicts be properly addressed rather then avoided. Positive resolutions are more likely to occur when both parties are open to criticisms, yet also sensitive to the needs of their spouse. When discussing heated issues it is best to be mindful of distractions such as television sets. When discussing the issues, try understanding the issue from your husband's perspective. When you are addressing the issue use "I" statements to describe how you are feeling. The "I" method will give your husband the impression that you are not being bossy or insensitive. Remember that God's wisdom will be given to those who seek to perform his will. Pray to the creator before having a heated discussion. If you and your husband are still arguing, pray that God will reveal his wisdom.

The Family Counseling Staff also highly recommends that married couples occasionally spend time away from their children. The psychologists claim that your marriage will suffer if your marriage lacks one-to-one time with your spouse. The experts claim that couples can still accomplish this goal while being on a tight budget. Cuddling on the sofa to watch a movie over frozen pizza after the children are put to bed is one suggestion.

The book addresses many other crucial topics that effect marriage. Experts will lead you through the strategies for: being a good steward of your money, raising Godly children, and healthy communication skills. A special chapter is dedicated to blended families and step-parenting. The book also addresses how to handle major crisis's such as unemployment and terminal illnesses. If you are seeking the marriage which will withstand all of life's storms, you will gain valuable tools from this book!

22 Random Things About Me

1) I remember telling my teachers how my greatest ambition was to become a full-time homemaker someday. I have always admired the women who will make financial sacrifices to create memories with their small children. I admire anybody who will gladly trade life in the corporate world for: tea parties, daily song and story time, making homemade play-dough, and other wholesome activities with their children. My best-friend's mother from junior high-school was a homemaker. My best-friend's mother had the open availability to:make hospital visits, bring meals to new mothers, and perform other random acts of kindness for family members. I have also always admired my aunts and grandmas who chose to become full-time homemakers. They have taken active roles in their children's education by chaperoning field trips and participating in the PTA. Their children can recall fun outings when school was not in session. Their children also have fond memories of home cooked meals, and other priceless benefits. These lovely ladies have also offered their time to volunteer at food-pantries and other charitable causes. A college education has always been deemed as a security for meaningful work if I can not pursue life as a full-time homemaker. I do not think my answer was favored by the Feminist agenda, but I still fail to find a more rewarding occupation!

2) I am currently completing my degree in Christian Studies. I was amazed at how there are many paid positions for those serving in the ministry! I recently had the joy of meeting a woman who was a paid children's minister for a medium sized church. I recently visited a Christian website, where one woman stated how she began earning money from home by freelance writing. This lady included websites that will pay for your articles. I am in the process of applying with brighthub, and will keep everyone updated. I may as well apply since I have been writing in my spare time for 19 years. I don't think I have ever been drawn to conventional occupations.

3) I enjoy shopping, but I do not regularly shop at malls. I prefer shopping at thrift shops and discount stores where $20.00 can go a long way.

4) I could live without a television. I prefer actually seeing the world by enjoying local events then being glued to the screen. If I am at home I prefer: reading, counted cross-stich , craft projects, cooking, and other more stimulating activities.

5) I used to be a vegetarian. I still enjoy veggie burgers.

6) I am a child of the 80s, yet I have never wanted a Nintendo. Pushing buttons in front of a screen where you can't use your imagination never seemed like fun to me! I preferred: books, craft projects, and playing pretend.

7) I enjoyed baby-sitting when I was in junior high and high school. I liked getting paid money to be within the comforts of a home. I enjoyed interacting with babies and small children!I have created fun memories with my adventures in baby-sitting. These adventures include: watching classics like the Wizard of Oz, creating street light snacks, craft projects, and reading stories.

8) I am currently collecting knee and ankle length floral skirts. I think that they are very comfortable and feminine looking. Most importantly they are modest. They might not be the most popular clothing trends, but I have always been a bit on the unique side anyway. Thrift stores seem to carry them.

9) I used to live in the rural northeast. It was a 20 minute drive to Wal-Mart and a 45 minute drive to the mall, but the scenery and sense of community was worth it!

10) I am planning to take short-term mission trips someday(2 weeks). I would like to give my time to those who live in the third world window.

11) I am thinking about starting a collection of vintage fairies and mermaids.

12) Anne of Green Gables was one of my favorite movies when I was a little girl.

13) I can not tan to save my life. Although over time I have come to embrace my pale skin.

14) At some point in time I would like to begin donating to Feed the Children's Abandoned Baby Center, which is located in Africa. The proceeds go toward:food, medical care, education, and an orphanage to underprivileged children. The footage of extreme poverty was depressing! I feel that helping these people would make me happier then purchasing a new shirt.

15) I had a very unique wedding. I purchased the Anti-Bride planner. I wore a gold vintage looking dress, because I look terrible in white. I chose a celestial theme with handmade centerpieces. I also purchased some unique decorations from a trendy store downtown
known as the Enchanted Bazaar.

16) I enjoy cooking. It is a creative outlet for me!

17) I would like to have a big family someday. I am thinking about having 2 children of my own, and also taking in foster children. I would like to provide a loving Christian home to broken hearted children with plans of adopting. This all depends on my husband's opinions so we'll see.

18) My dream home is a Victorian house. I love the art exhibited in the architecture. I am doubtful that this will ever happen, but I can always dream.

19) I enjoy hosting fun themed parties. Those in high-school might remember my holiday party in 10th grade, or the 1950s and Hawaiian themed bashes of the past.

20) I currently enjoy being part of a wonderful children's ministry called the Good News Club.

21) I currently serve in the baby nursery at church. I have also enjoyed assisting with AWANA cubbies, the crafts teacher for Vacation Bible School, and assisting with the church youth group.

22) I was previously employed as an environmental lobbiest. I also contemplated majoring in theater or creative writing in junior high-and high-school. As I said earlier, I am drawn to unconventional occupations!

It's Not How Much Money You Have, It's How You Strech Your Dollars!

While shopping, I prefer to think outside of the box. If you are willing to use creativity,it is possible to stretch your dollars when you have limited funds. I have been challenging myself to stretch my dollars as far as possible since I was old enough to earn an allowance. I have accumulated many money savings strategies over the years. Many people have been fretting over the finances with the current state of our economy. I hope that regardless of your financial situation, you will find these strategies to be helpful.

Garage Sales: One man's junk is another man's treasure! I have been a big fan of garage sales since I was old enough to earn an allowance. I quickly realized that it was more economical to purchase used toys that were in good condition, then it was to pay $20 for the same toys at the store. The same principle applies to making purchases on furniture and other products. Sometimes you may also find brand new items at yard sales. Last year my friend found a brand new Spider man backpack for her son to use the following school year. My friend only paid $2.00 for an item that could have cost close to $20 in a department store.

Thrift Stores: I have been a fan of thrift stores since junior high-school. The 70's had made a major comeback in the fashion scene. I did not see the point in paying $25-$30 for a blouse, when I could purchase an authentic 70's shirt for $2-$5. I am 27 years old and I still enjoy making clothing purchases at thrift stores. I am usually able to find gently used items from major retailers such as Gap and Ann Taylor Loft. Most of the shirts I have received compliments on were purchased for a quarter a piece at one of my favorite thrift shops. I also have phenomenal luck at finding brand new products at thrift stores. Often times overstocked items or liquidized merchandise are sent to thrift stores. I purchased most of my make-up from a local thrift store in high-school , due to the store carrying liquidized products. I also stocked up on craft and needlepoint projects, which were featured from a craft store that went bankrupt. I received many compliments from my handmade and heartfelt Christmas gift. The Good-will near my home sells unsold clearance item merchandise from Target. Target also donates items that are in excellent shape but can not be sold due to dented packaging. Shopping at thrift stores can also help you gain a sense of community, knowing that your proceeds went toward charitable causes.

Big Lots: Overstocked items from Hallmark, Jcpenny's, and Pier 1 Imports find homes here. I was able to purchase a beautiful Hallmark wedding album which was valued at $50, but purchased for $10 as a wedding gift. Big Lots is also a great place to stock up on school supplies and gift wrap.

Clearance Racks: I immediately search the clearance racks anytime I go shopping. I was able to purchase a pink blouse with matching floral pants and a hat for my God-daughter at Kohl's 2 Autumns ago. The outfit was originally $25.00. Due to being a discontinued line, the outfit was only $2.90. Many of my clothing and gift purchases were found on clearance racks.

Dollar Stores: You can call me cheap, but I have been a dollar store addict for years. You can purchase cards at dollar stores for fifty cents a piece. I also purchase the vast majority of my gift wrap from dollar store chains. Dollar Stores also offer great deals on: party favors and decorations, non-perishable groceries, and school and office supplies. Dollar stores have a negative stereotype regarding food, but I am being honest by stating I have never had any problems.

Grocery Saving Tips: I try to purchase generic merchandise whenever possible. You can't taste the difference and those pennies add up. I will also add advice from a woman who fed her family of three on her husband's meager income of less then 12k per year, COOK FROM SCRATCH. Convenience foods may seem appealing, but they can drain your budget. It may also help to prepare meat dishes only 3-4 times a week. I am not implying that you serve tofu dishes. A nice vegetarian dish might include: homemade pasta soup, chili, homemade macaroni and cheese, or bean burritos. Researchers discovered higher risks of developing cancer among individuals with high-intakes of red meat,(just some food for thought).

Shop Off Season: It truly pays to shop off season! I was able to purchase an elegant burgundy formal gown for $10.00 at a fashion boutique in high-school. The original cost was $160.00. I found the dress in the summertime, and it made a lovely prom dress for the following school year.

Recycle Unwanted Gifts: I'm sure that we have all received gifts from loved ones that we did not want or need. Perhaps you wondered what you are supposed to do with 2 George Foreman Grills, especially when there was no gift receipt. The answer is simple. Find a family member or friend that you know that does not own a George Foreman grill. When an opportunity presents itself give them the grill.

Shop Year Round for Gifts: It makes more sense to stock up on all of the after Christmas sales for next years gifts then to pay full price. I try to start my Christmas shopping in January and continue until December. I will search clearance racks for any items someone on my holiday shopping list will want. I also start stocking up on deals months prior to baby showers and other special events. If you think outside of the here and now, you'll catch the best deals!

Flea Markets: I have a beautiful antique vase which was purchased at a flea market for $3.00. I have also experienced good luck on purchasing seriously discounted items. I always seem to leave with the best deals on Avon cosmetics and brand new paperback novels.

Coupons: It may only seem like you are saving fifty cents, but the savings add up quickly. The buy one get one free items are my favorites. I am currently holding a coupon which entitles me to a free espresso drink from McDonald's. Don't underestimate the savings of a coupon clipper!

Other Helpful Hints:

1) If you love to read, try hunting for books at a local used bookstore. Better yet, borrow from the library.

2) Try taking the bus some of the time. It's cheaper then filling up your gas tank!

3) When eating out use coupons. Often times I have found buy one get one free specials for meals. If you have children go to Denny's on the kids eat free nights. Happy Hour is a great way to get a romantic evening from home on a McDonald's budget.

4) If you want to get out of the house but lack funds....don't despair! Find free activities in your community, such as going to a state nature park. Plan a cook-out party with a fun and creative theme. Plan to go bike-riding together as a family. Volunteer once a week for a charitable cause such as a food pantry. Who says that being frugal can't be fun?

6) Save your change and use coin rolls. I have accumulated $10.00-$30.00 in change on numerous occasions.

Before making any purchases be sure to ask yourself a few questions. Ask yourself if you are really going to use the item. Do not buy anything unless you are absolutely certain it will be put to use. Ask yourself if you will be able to purchase the item you want elsewhere for less money. Think about how soon the item will go on sale. It makes no sense to pay $75.00 for an item, when in 2 months it will be discounted to $10.00. You should also think about your necessities. If making the purchase will effect your ability to pay bills or buy groceries, DON'T BUY! These are questions I always ask myself before making any purchases.

I hope that you found these tips to be helpful! Please remember that your Heavenly father is recession proof. "Therefore I tell you not to worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly father feeds them. Are you not more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life" (Matthew 6:25-27 NIV).

The Lost Art of Letter Writing

Time is precious and often overlooked! People have the tendency to become bombarded with busyness, sometimes without meaning to. Careers, school, weekly errands, activities, recreational pleasure, church, and other ventures accumulate our time. When asked about keeping in contact with loved ones, we often reply that we are too busy. I challenge everyone reading this to write a letter to one loved one a week. It may seem challenging, but may only take 10-15 minutes of your personal time. The fact that you took the time to write a personalized note to someone, will create a closeness miles can not separate. My New Year's Resolution this year was to do a better job of keeping in touch with my family and friends. I have devoted my Sunday afternoons to letter writing. My best-friend in New York recently remarked at how much she enjoyed receiving a Snoopy greeting card. The hand written note inside brightened her day. I sent the card to my friend as an attempt to bring cheer, due to some trials she was experiencing. My best-friend claimed that the card and loving message has lifted her spirits on many occasions. It's amazing how such a simple gift can lift someone's spirits! Whose life will you brighten this week?

The Lost Virtue of Modesty.

Jesse and I decided to escape for a romantic evening at a local gourmet restaurant. I was appalled at the apparel some of the women were wearing! One woman was wearing a tight T-shirt that read, "touch these", across the chest. It is sad to see how modesty is not always a requirement for fads! When has it become desirable for men to view women as sex objects? I would prefer to be treated like a lady, which can only be made possible through modest apparel. When shopping for clothing we should always ask ourselves, "Am I following guidelines from fashion magazines, or am I honoring fashion by God's standards?" "In like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel"(1 Timothy 2:9 NKJV). God is very clear about his expectations regarding the way we present ourselves. My husband and I both enjoyed this homemade recipe in the midst of a snowstorm this past month. I typically store the ingredients in a mason jar, so my husband and I can enjoy a home cooked meal from scratch on a busy day. Mason jars also serve as heartfelt gifts for loved ones around the holiday season. After all, who doesn't enjoy a home cooked meal?

Pasta Soup

1/2 cup of macaroni
1/4 cup of dried lentils
1/4 cup of dried and chopped celery and carrots
2 Tbs of Parmesan Cheese grated
1 Tbs Onion Flakes
1 Tbs Chicken Soup base
1 tsp dried parsley
1/2 tsp Oregano
1 dash of garlic powder

1) Combine the ingredients into a 2 quart saucepan. Combine 3 cups of water and 3 cups of chicken broth to a boil, and then reduce the heat.

2) Cover and simmer for 40 minutes, or until the lentils are tender. It is important to stir the contents periodically, or else the ingredients will stick to the saucepan.
